Perfection Is Overrated: Why I Love Performance Workshops For Singers and Speakers

The thing about perfectionism that kills creativity for me is that it makes me think that I don't have enough time to simply "be creative". This is a total lie that perfectionism tells me, because I actually love "the process"!
The work I get to do with singers and speakers as a vocal coach is fully rooted in being present in the process-- It's truly where the “gold” is.
Mining this gold is why I adore coaching 1:1, and hosting workshops like Song Salon. You don't have to be finished with whatever it is you're working on! You can show up and share where you're at, and that is actually just right (notice how I didn't say "that's perfect"?).
Earlier this month, a beautiful handful of my clients and I gathered in the live room at Light Rail Studios in San Francisco, with our voices and our songs exactly as we were.
Brand new originals were debuted, classic covers were re-imagined, performance anxiety, and stage presence was explored.
I always share a tune with the group, too.
I'd been learning "I Love You, Bitch" by Lizzo, but didn't completely have the guitar part down, so I invited my friend and colleague, Ciara McAllister to play piano, and she held down the accompaniment so I could test out playing as best I could on the chorus. It felt so damn good to let loose and not overly edit myself!

Give yourself a chance to let go and relish the process… You can try something in this vein with a group of friends, on your own in front of a mirror, or by taking a video on your phone (post it or don't post it).
It's the action-taking for yourself that counts!
