What happens in my first vox session?

All new clients begin with an initial evaluation during our first session. I'll learn in-depth about your vocal history and how I can best help you. I'll assess your voice to determine your physical strengths and weaknesses in the current moment. Most importantly, I will create a custom vocal workout just for you! We'll upgrade and add to it over sessions as you progress.

If you have an upcoming performance, recording session or audition, I will definitely leave time to look at the songs you've got going and break down the sections that are challenging for you, so you'll know exactly how to practice outside of our time together.

If you are a first-time speaking client, you'll also begin with an initial evaluation tailored to your specific situation.

What is your cancellation/reschedule policy?

There are no cancellations once you purchase a session or package. I have a 48-hour reschedule policy. To reschedule an existing session, you must give at least 48 hours notice by phone, email, or via the online scheduler, or your session will be forfeited. No exceptions (including same-day illness).

What is your purchase/refund policy?

Please note that all purchases are non-refundable. Clients may reschedule sessions with 48 hours advance notice. There are no cancellations/refunds once payment goes through. Please be certain about your purchase before you book.

What equipment will I need for an online voice lesson?

Equipment wise, you’ll need a strong Wi-Fi connection, and a device to take the session on (a desktop or laptop computer work best, but a phone or tablet is doable). To ensure optimal sound, it helps to have a separate device to play song tracks on (ie. a phone or tablet if you are taking your session on a computer). You can also accompany yourself on keys or guitar if you play— Whichever you are most comfortable with! We’ll meet on Zoom for the session.

What is your teaching philosophy?

What types of singers do you work with?

Many of my clients sing professionally, some sing seriously outside their day jobs and some are brand new. I love working with committed singers, whether they have loads of natural talent, a lot of passion, or both!

I teach most modern styles of music: Pop, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Folk, Country, Musical Theatre, Electronic/Dance.

Who works with you to develop their speaking voice?

I help storytellers, actors, authors, podcasters, entrepreneurs, founders, marketing directors, educators, lawyers, medical professionals, business owners, and animal communicators add variation, nuance and agility to their speaking voices.

How long will it take for me to gain total control of my voice?

No two voices are alike and there are a few factors to consider — innate talent level, past experience and the physical condition that your voice is currently in.

Improvement happens within the first couple weeks of study, as I give you useful technical exercises customized for your voice. It’s in your hands to commit to practicing regularly. Small shifts in coordination begin to occur and those turn into habits that hold. Like fitness, vocal study is a commitment. Six months to a year is realistic for dramatic development.

How often should I practice?

Singers and speakers are athletes who require regular workouts to perform optimally. Similar to strength training for other parts of the body, practicing more often for shorter periods of time—everyday for 15 to 30 minutes versus once per week for an hour or more—is better. It’s the repetition of doing your exercises that will help you break subconscious habits that are not serving you and build in the new coordination you are developing in your lessons.

Of course you’ll want to be mindful not to overdo it—vocal training is NOT a “no pain, no gain” situation! As you discover what feels correct and what doesn’t, the muscles can fatigue a bit and need time to rest. Practicing for shorter periods of time more often will help you stay on the right track.

What if I currently have vocal damage? Will you work with me?

If you are dealing with damage from vocal nodules, polyps, severe acid reflux or another vocal condition, I'll need to connect with your ENT doctor (otolaryngologist) or speech therapist first. With the approval of your medical team and regular monitoring, we can work in tandem to optimize your vocal rehabilitation.

What is the youngest age you teach?

I coach people ages 14 and beyond.
I am happy to offer you a recommendation to a trusted colleague for children’s vocal work.
