How Long Do I Have To Practice Singing or Speaking?

We've all heard that it takes 10,000 hours to truly master a skill. I agree with this. I've definitely put 10,000+ hours into my own vocal study.

If it takes that long, how does one stay motivated to move through the process? What can you do along the way?

In my nearly 20 years of coaching vocalists, I can tell you with certainty that small amounts of focused effort do add up to lasting changes.

What if you took 10 to 15 minutes, five days per week, and really laser focused your vocal practice?

I make this very easy for my singing and speaking clients by creating custom vocal warm-up recordings for them. I guide them through scales and diction exercises so that they know exactly what to sing or speak in their 10 to 15 minute window of practice time.

Their recordings are hosted via Dropbox, so all they have to do is open the app, access their vox folder, and click on their latest session.

I suggest blocking out specific time for practice via your online calendar with a reminder, or simply setting an alarm on your phone.

Consistent repetition on a manageable piece of new information is the most effective way to practice for retaining material, and building the physical coordination you'll need to perform a song, or present a talk beautifully. Minutes add up to hours faster than you'd expect!

VOX WITCH TIP:

Practice songs, speeches, or stories in chunks. And for sure, start with the intro! The first couple lines of a song, presentation or story are where the nerves will hit you the hardest in live performance. Combat this by getting your initial notes, lyrics and phrases dialed-in so you can trust that you'll be able to deliver in front of an audience.
